BRIEF PROFILE OF HON JUSTICE DAKETIMA GABRIEL KIO
Hon. Justice Daketima Gabriel Kio, born on the 7th day of December, 1974 is a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Rivers State, Nigeria. Hon. Justice Daketima Gabriel Kio holds the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Public Law (Ph.D) with bias in Comparative Criminal Law from the University of Nigeria, 2019. He had his Master’s degree (LL.M) from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (2008) having obtained the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) with Second Class Honours, Upper Division from the Rivers State University (2003). Kio was called to the Nigerian Bar on Tuesday, 12th day of October, 2004.
Prior to his appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Rivers State on the 24th day of December, 2021, Hon. Justice Daketima Gabriel Kio was the Founding Partner of Lord Denning Chambers in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He was also a Senior Lecturer with the Novena University, Kwale, Delta State as well as Lecturer in Law with the Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State where he contributed both in teaching and research in the area of Criminal Law, Law Practice, Jurisprudence and Legal Theory. Justice KIO serves as Member of the Governing Board of the Justice Mary Odili Judicial Institute, Rivers State.
Hon. Justice Kio is a member of various professional bodies including:
- Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK.
- The Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON).
Honourable Justice KIO is an author of various books, namely, The Path of Responsibility (2015), The Law of Homicide in Nigerian Criminal Jurisprudence (2022) and The Practice of Law in the Temple of Justice: Reminiscence of an African Trial Judge (2023, unpublished). Honourable Justice KIO has contributed to learned and scholarly journals, including Chapters in Books.
Honourable Justice KIO has attended various Conferences both locally and internationally where he has participated and presented various papers on Law, the Practice of Law and Procedure, and the Legal Profession. Hon. Justice Kio was a speaker at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held at the Eko Atlantic City, Lagos in August, 2022 on “Lack of Consistency in Judicial Pronouncements in Nigeria”. Honourable Justice Kio participated at the 3rd Edition of Nigerian Admiralty Law Colloquium with the theme, “Beyond Maritime Security Threats in the Gulf of Guinea: Harnessing the Gains of a Secured Maritime Domain” held in May, 2023 at the Victoria Island, Lagos. Hon. Justice Kio was a Panelist at the Annual Conference on Public Interest and Development Law, Ikeja, in June, 2023. He was also a Panelist at the Section on Legal Practice, Abuja, in July, 2023. Kio was a Panelist with Hon. Justice Mike Chibita, Justice of the Ugandan Supreme Court and Justice Daniel Musinga, Justice of the Kenya Court of Appeal on Restoring Pathways to Justice held at Naivasha, Kenya in August, 2023. KIO is married to Mrs. Tuboibibo Daketima, a Community Health Professional with the Rivers State Primary and Health Care Management Board, and their marriage is blessed with four children: three boys and a Girl; David, Daniel, Darius and Daisy.
